Our Story

It all started a few years back when we found a great patch of dirt on Aotea/Great Barrier Island. With our Kiwi can-do attitude and a global appreciation for exceptional coffee, we embarked on an adventure like no other. Welcome to Aotea Roast, New Zealand's pioneering off-grid coffee roastery!

Located in Medlands, alongside Aotea Brewery and a native plant nursery, we roast our coffee in the fresh island air and practice sustainable methods every step of the way. What began as a small, local venture has since grown into an online store, bringing our small-batch, artisan coffee to coffee lovers beyond the island.

Joining forces with Aotea Brewery has enabled us to create a vibrant hub where you can enjoy fresh coffee at our coffee bar, fuel your Barrier adventures, and share in the magic of this unique spot

What our customers say

  • So Fresh

Aotea Roast’s off-grid approach makes their coffee even more special. The fresh plunger grind beans are perfect for my mornings, and I love supporting such a sustainable business. So fresh. Ollie P.

  • Sustainable

Aotea Roast is a gem! Not only are their beans fresh and full of flavor, but I love that they’re roasted in such a unique off-grid location. It’s inspiring to know my coffee comes from a place that values sustainability. The espresso grind is spot on for my machine—rich, smooth, and eco-friendly! James G.

  • The best
